About this Exploration: Prudence Crandall established the first black female academy in New England (Canterbury, Conn) and was arrested and imprisoned for doing so. She was later released, but the school was forced to close. After being run out of town, she and her brother Hezekiah homesteaded near Elk Falls while in their 80s, where she continued to advocate human rights. She is buried on the north side of the middle section of Elk Falls Cemetery. |
