Email Address: heringtonmuseum@att.net About this Exploration: In 1880, Monroe Davis Herington saw an advertisement in an Illinois newspaper of land for sale in this location. He purchased the ranch and cattle and the following year moved his family to the ranch. As he increased his cattle business, he built a town around his ranch and gave the town his name.
He knew that railroad tracks were being built in Kansas and was determined to have trains come to his town. He offered the railroad company right of way through his property and lots to build on. It was through his efforts the Missouri Pacific reached Herington in 1885.
The City of Herington was incorporated in 1887, as more railroad companies came here, by 1888 it was a railroad boomtown.
