From 1958-1999, local self-taught, grassroots artist Florence Deeble created her environment. Florence traveled extensively in the United States and brought back postcards of the vacation trips. Numerous postcard scenes such as Mount Rushmore, Cathedral Mountain and Estes Park gradually appeared over the almost-40-year period in her backyard. Her medium was colored concrete with unusual rocks. Usually visitors want to see how many vacation sites that they have visited match Florence’s travels.
Miss Deeble was the Lucas town historian. Florence’s focus, when she was 90-99 years old, was her side yard which showcased the settlement of Lucas. She created a concrete and sculpture Lucas and a Kansas Mount Rushmore along with embedding townspeople names and historical facts on plaques, along with her version of Camelot.
Open May-September, Monday-Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sunday 1-5 p.m.; October-April, Monday and Thursday-Saturday 10 a.m.-noon, 1-4 p.m.; Sunday 1-4 p.m. Closed holidays. Admission fee is included with Grassroots Art Center admission fee.
