Peanuts were thought to be useful only to feed livestock. He created 325 products from peanuts including candies, milk, cookies, coffee, butter, oil, paper, ice cream, facial cream, bread, sausage, and over 30 dyes.
Chosen as a one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas People, George Washington Carver became an adult in Minneapolis, Kansas. He started his first business here and owned property. Although born to slaves, he was free to pursue his education in several communities. Moving to Minneapolis in 1880 to help with friends' laundry business, George was often seen toting baskets about town. After graduating from MHS, he attended college in Iowa and became a professor in Alabama.
The Ottawa County Historical Museum has an extensive display on George Washington Carver. The display includes records showing where he owned land in Minneapolis. The curator is quite knowledgeable about Mr. Carver's life and achievements.
