Over the course of millions of years, the ocean floor rose, was covered with soil and other rocks, until wind and water erosion exposed what we now know as Monument Rocks. Rising over 100 feet into the air from seemingly flat prairie, they served as a landmark along the old Smoky Hill Trail. Many people enjoy climbing the rocks. They are fun to explore and present wonderful photo opportunities. The road takes you between the rock formations, so even just driving in to the site is a wonderful experience. Monument Rocks, along with Castle Rock, was voted one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas! From Oakley go about 20 miles south on U.S. 83 to Jayhawk Road. A big sign directs you east and south for another seven miles to the rocks. The country road is dusty but fun. You might want to slow down a little for the cattle guards across the roads. They look like short bridges between fences. Cars can drive over them, but cows won't walk across them. Monument Rocks are located on private property. Please be respectful of the site, so that people for years to come can enjoy one of the overall 8 Wonders of Kansas. |
