About this Exploration: The Plainville Township Lake, located a mile west and a mile south of town, is a hidden gem. For many years this beautiful setting has been the site of family picnics, reunions, 4th of July fireworks displays, and some good old fashioned fishing. Today, the community struggles with how to improve the appearance and usage of the lake.
Originally the lake was created as part of the need for work resulting from the hard times of the Great Depression. It didn't take long for the lake to become a place of recreation and gathering. The latest edition to the lake is a nine-hole disc golf course.
A task force has been formed that hopes to create renewed opportunities at the lake such as walking and biking trails, camping, shelter houses, and playground equipment. There are now electrical hookups for campers. Call 785.688.4064 to reserve a space.
For the Explorer, travel across the dam to the south end and find the historical marker that commemorates the building of the lake. Or, if you want to do dirt, go to the backside of the lake and take the various paths to find the old racetrack.
