About this Exploration: The rich Mexican heritage in Ulysses is best represented by its authentic and TexMex food. Although there are many Mexican restaurants in Ulysses, El Ranchito Café has one of the most meaningful pasts. It is definitely an explorer gem.
The cafe story begins with two parents, nine kids, and a
dream for a family restaurant. In 1968, David and Gloria Romero, both born in
Mexico, fulfilled their dream. The restaurant was a hit, of
course, as the business was a natural fit for Gloria as
she was accustomed to feeding her family of 11. However, after David’s death in an automobile accident, Gloria knew she
couldn’t run the business on her own.
To keep the restaurant open and its plethora of regulars
happy, Gloria called on her children for help. The children began rotating
management of the cafe, which continues today. Every two years, a sibling and
their family once again return to the reins to carry on Gloria’s tradition of
simple, authentic, and quality Mexican food. No one knows that better than college students coming back to Ulysses for the holidays. A "Chito fix" is a must for any college student before returning to their school-town full of Mexican restaurant "impostors!" Try the local favorite, the El Ranchito Special -- meat, beans, lettuce, tomato, sour cream, avocado slices, smothered with green chile on a fried tortilla shell. It is a local favorite.
Open Tuesday-Saturday 11 a.m.-9 p.m.; Sunday 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
