About this Exploration: The original Trego County Jail was located in the basement of the Trego County Courthouse from 1889, until it was condemned in 1976--almost 100 years! The original jail, complete with jail cells, iron doors, and window iron gratings, was ordered from Pauly Jail Building & Manufacturing Co., St. Louis, MO, for the sum of $2,570 at the same time that the courthouse was built. The historic jail cells feature flat bars and an unusual locking system. Some of the jail cells remain intact today in their original location in the basement of the courthouse and are used for storage. If you would like more information or a tour, contact the local historian and Trego County Register of Deeds, Evea Rumpel. The Trego County Courthouse is open Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m. |
