About this Exploration: Steaks are the most popular entree at the Western Kansas Saloon & Grill, followed by seafood and pasta. Several different specials are offered by the chef each day. Make sure and leave room for their specialty desserts, such as creme brulee or chocolate lava cake. In addition, there are a good variety of brews and spirits available. Relax in the casual atmosphere at the Western Kansas Saloon & Grill, a restored hardware store which features antiques and local art. Check out the original pressed-tin ceiling, freight elevator, skylight, and hardwood floors. Don't forget to ask about the triangle-shaped hole in the floor which is the buildings most unusual feature. The hole has been filled in but you can still clearly see it. This hole was used by early day store clerks to drop a coin to warn the gamblers below that the law had just walked in the front door! The Saloon also features a large Christmas tree right inside the front door, which is decorated year round. "Why," you ask? The answer is that the popular WaKeeney Christmas tree and decorations were designed in the basement of this former Keraus Hardware Store during the late 1940s-1950. These same decorations are still used today when the "Christmas City of the High Plains" lights up for the holidays. Open Tuesday-Friday 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 5-9 p.m.; Saturday 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 5-9:30 p.m.; and Sunday 5-9 p.m. |
