About this Exploration: The original two-story Leach House was built in 1890 by Louis B. Leach, a prominent Wamego businessman,* who added the third story in 1904. The home was fashioned to resemble a Villa in Messina, an island in Sicily, that Mr. and Mrs. Leach had once visited on vacation.
The original structure consisted of 14 gables; 15 outside doors for the 15 “practical” living rooms; and nine closets, bathrooms, and linen rooms.
In 1987, Drs. William and Rose Ditto purchased the home and began renovating it to its original grandeur. They added a garage on the west side, which included custom-built gables to match the original structure. Only the most seasoned architectural historian would be able to tell where the “old” and the “new” start and end on this 19th century Sicilian architecture with Victorian touches.
The refurbished Ditto-Leach House consists of more than 6,000 square feet of living space and includes 70+ windows, 21 gables, four and one-half baths, and four working fireplaces.

*Louis B. Leach, along with George Trout, formed a partnership that included the Iron Clad Store, Iron Clad Lumber Co., Leach's Opera House, and Wamego State Bank. |
