Kalida Castle CaveAddress:
964 Osage Road
Email Address: info@woodsoncountychamber.com About this Exploration: Kalida is now one of the many ghost towns of Kansas. But in 1873, after winning the election for county seat, it was a prospering small town. Two years later, in 1875, the residents moved the town to the newly elected county seat Yates Center. The only structure now standing where the town of Kalida once thrived is the Kalida Castle Cave. James Davidson had the above-ground cave built in 1893 to immortalize the city that lived only five years. Made of native dressed and rubbed sandstone and holding the same temperature year round, it was once used as a farm utility cave.
The current owners welcome visitors to view this unique piece of history located on their private property located 1-1/2 miles east and 2 miles south of Yates Center, roughly the corner of Osage and 90th Road. Though it is an impressive sight any time of year, it is especially stunning in the spring when wildflowers decorate the cave structure.
