About this Exploration:
As you walk into the Mariadahl Cemetery, you are led to a unique feature carved from native limestone. The carving depicts the Mariadahl Lutheran Church which was displaced from the Blue River Valley in 1958 when the Tuttle Creek Reservoir was built. Further exploration of the cemetery reveals the grave of Maria Johnson. Maria's children, John A. Johnson, the first Swede to settle in Kansas, and John's siblings named the area they chose to settle, Mariadahl (Maria's Valley). To John A. and his wife two children were born. John Wm. (Dec. 30, 1856) and Cala J. (Nov. 11, 1857). These were the first Kansas born children of Swedish parents. There are numerous headstones in the Swedish language in both the Mariadahl Cemetery and the Olsburg Cemetery just across the highway. |
